Put not your trust in
princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth
forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Happy
is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his
God:
Psalm 146:3-5
Indeed, there is no help in any man because
he lives only for a little while; like the flower in the field, he blossoms
today and tomorrow he is no more. So also is the help he renders. Many people
have made this mistake of putting their trust in men, as a result their
destinies have been battered with disappointment and failure.
There was this young woman I met in my
university days. She was having an affair with married man whom she called her
helper. I called her one day on phone and she sounded depressed, I went to her
house to find her weeping uncontrollably. After calming her down, she told me
that the man who has been helping her called to tell her that he would no
longer help her again. I was shocked at how much trust this lady had had in a
man. Then I said to her, ‘if this man was the keeper of your life also, do you
know you would have been dead by now?’ She paused for a moment and stirred at
me. She was shocked to hear this. I said to her, ‘Yes! You would have been dead
now’. She said, ‘I never thought of it because he promised to be there always
for me’ I told her there is no help in any man. The Bible says, “It is
better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man” (Psalm 118:8).
Hosea
13:9
O Israel, thou hast destroyed
thyself; but in me is thine help.
Many
people have destroyed themselves, some have traded their dignity and sanity at
the floor of ungodly helpers, who have used them, abused them and left them in
the cold.
You
may have been a victim of several disappointments, some of which you paid a
very costly prize to be help. No man can do for you what God can do.
David
said “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my
help.” (Psalm 121:1). In
verse 2, he declared “My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and
earth” David
discovered that there is no help in any man but in God.
When
God wants to help a man, He sends a helper. Helpers are gifts from God – they
are neither acquired nor bought with money. They are sent by God in times of
need. “For the LORD saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and
whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel. And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from
under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash” (2
King 14:26-27NKJV).
The
help from God through an ordained helper does not come with conditions. The man
God appoints to help anyone does not fulfill his purpose based on sentiment or
selfish gains. In other words, the beneficiary of this help does not need to
pay for the help he or she receives whether in cash or in kind. Any helper who comes
to you with conditions, is not from God flee from such a helper.
The
help that is from God is everlasting. In Him there is no disappointment of any
kind. This was one of the secrets of King David’s success. He knew God as the
source of every help, which is the reason he could boldly declare “Behold,
God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul” (Psalm 45:4).
The lord is your helper. “God is our
refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1.) He is always there to
help you. He said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
So that we may boldly say, The Lord
is my helper…” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
You can only
receive help from God when you depend on Him and when you call on Him. He is a “very present help” meaning He is
ready and always available to help whoever trusts in Him. The Lord is your
helper.
